Top 5 Do’s and Don’ts of Sunscreen (And How to Do Them Right)

with No Comments

Sunscreen is the foundation of any great skincare routine, yet too often it’s taken for granted or applied incorrectly. At Peonia Medical, we’re dedicated to helping you protect, care for and support the health of your skin under the guidance of experts and personalized care. Sunscreen used correctly doesn’t just prevent sunburn, it prevents premature aging, sunspots, and skin cancer. Let’s take a look at the top five sunscreen errors, and how to fix them.

1. Not Using Enough Sunscreen

The Issue: We all only apply 25–50% of the suggested dose so SPF 30 really functions like SPF 10–15.

The Fix: On your face, apply a nickel-sized amount or apply the “two-finger rule” (a line of product along your index and middle fingers). For body coverage, you’re looking for 30 ml (a shot glass). And never miss easily overlooked areas ears, eyelids, hands and the back of your neck.

2. Leaving Sunscreen at Home or on Cloudy Days

The Problem: You may assume cloudy skies or indoor lighting translates to “no sunscreen.” Think again.

The Fix: UVA rays, which pass through glass and clouds, cause long-term deep skin damage. Even when you’re inside or in the car, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily or look for a product which also has blue-light protection if you’re on screens for hours on end.

3. Using Just Once a Day

The Problem: Many believe sunscreen provides all-day protection after a single morning application.

The Solution: Sunscreen expires quickly particularly when outside, active or sweaty. Reapply every 2 hours, and more often when swimming or drying off with a towel. Carry a travel-sized SPF stick or spray with you for quick top-ups.

4. Selecting the Inappropriate Sunscreen Type

The Issue: Not all sunscreens are suitable for everyone some may clog pores or cause irritation.

The Solution: Choose a sunscreen that suits your skin’s requirements:

Oily or acne skin: Apply non-comedogenic, matte-finish or gel products.

Dry skin: Apply moisturising sunscreens containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

Sensitive skin: Apply mineral-based blockers (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide).

Always make sure this is broad-spectrum with an SPF of 30 or higher, and if necessary, find water-resistant statements (reapply after 40–80 minutes in water).

5. Depending on SPF in Makeup or Moisturiser

The Problem: Many think that an SPF moisturizer or foundation replaces sunscreen.

The Solution: SPF in cosmetics is usually too low to be adequate. Use a specific sunscreen, followed by moisturiser and makeup. If you absolutely must have a mid-day boost, use a powder SPF with protection being maintained on target without disturbing makeup.
