Learning Skincare Myths and What To Do Instead

Myth 1: You don’t need to use sunscreen on cloudy days

Everybody forgets sunscreen on sunny days when the sun isn’t present, thinking their skin is protected. But ultraviolet light passes through clouds and also damages your skin even on cloudy days. Daily exposure leads to premature aging, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Putting on a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 daily throughout your life is one of the smartest things you can do for healthy skin in the long term.

Myth 2: The more products you use, the better your results

It’s easy to pile five or six products on your skin hoping each does something remarkable. But overwhelming your skin may irritate it, trigger breakouts or even weaken the effectiveness of key ingredients. Instead, establish a simple routine with good products for your skin type. Apply products in the right order starting with the thinnest texture like serums and ending with the thickest moisturizers and let each layer dry.

Myth 3: If something is ‘natural’ or ‘organic,’ it must be better

Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean that it’s safe or will function on your face. Poison ivy is natural, but you wouldn’t apply it to your face. Natural products rarely go through the clinical trials and stability of professionally made skin care. Do more than read labels; seek products that use ingredients that have been shown to work and choose products that dermatologists or skin specialists use.
