The materials employed in thread lifts have a long history of use in conventional surgeries for wound closure. These materials can either be permanent, such as polypropylene, or temporary and resorbable, such as PDO (polydiaxone), PCL (polycaprolactone), and PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid). All types of threads are utilized in aesthetic treatments to tighten, volumize, and lift the skin. Some threads, such as APTOS threads, combine multiple materials for enhanced efficacy.

PDO threads

Soluble PDO (polydioxanone) is a material that has been extensively used in the medical field, particularly in surgical procedures. The mechanism of PDO involves both muscle and tendon relaxation, along with the stimulation of new collagen synthesis in the skin. It also promotes the production of elastin and hyaluronic acid, which are crucial components for achieving a youthful appearance through cellular self-stimulation.

In aesthetic practices, PDO threads typically stay in the skin between 6 to 12 months. During this period, they are entirely absorbed within 6 to 8 months, while continuing to stimulate collagen production for an additional 4 to 6 months. These threads induce changes at the subcutaneous level (dermis), triggering an inflammatory response that leads to the generation of new collagen.

PDO threads have proven effectiveness in enhancing pores and reducing fine wrinkles by augmenting collagen formation within the dermal matrix, thereby increasing the thickness of thinning skin. They can also be used to address acne scarring and laxity of the body’s skin. Body PDO Threads are specifically designed to tighten sagging skin on various areas such as the stomach, buttocks, back, inner thighs, and upper arms. PLLA threads

PLLA(poly-L-lactic acid) threads exhibit an impressive longevity, with the ability to last for up to 2 years after being inserted, after which they gradually break down into glucose, carbon dioxide, and water.

Threads made from PLLA are frequently employed as a substitute for fillers and botulinum toxin, primarily due to their volumizing properties. Notably, they possess the remarkable ability to stimulate the production of both Type 1 and Type 3 collagen. In fact, PLLA threads are considerably more potent in their collagen-stimulating effects compared to PDO threads. PCL threads

Over the past few years, PCL threads, including those with a combination of materials including PCL, have gained significant popularity. These threads exhibit an impressive longevity, lasting beyond 2 years within the body, and are eventually broken down into naturally occurring substances present in our skin. Notably, their prolonged collagen-stimulating effects make them exceptionally potent compared to PDO or PLLA threads.

PCL threads are particularly effective for various aesthetic purposes. They are highly recommended for achieving jawline tightening, nose lift, and mid-face tissue replacement. Their robust performance in these areas makes them a preferred choice among individuals seeking significant enhancements in these specific facial features.

To ensure a painless experience during the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered gently as an initial step. After that, you may experience a gentle sensation of tugging on the skin. Following the procedure, mild bruising and swelling may occur, typically lasting for two to three days, for which we advice using ice packs to effectively relieve the discomfort.

The objective of thread-lifting extends beyond merely lifting sagging skin. It encompasses a regenerative process that stimulates the production of the patient’s own collagen, resulting in skin rejuvenation. To prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), it is crucial to apply SPF30+ sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight as well as tanning machines.

Avoid washing the treated areas on the day of the procedure. Washing can be resumed from the next day but avoid rubbing or massaging the face for a duration of two weeks.

For a period of 3 to 4 weeks, it is advisable to avoid opening the mouth too wide, and if possible, refrain from dental treatments for six weeks.

To minimize swelling, it is recommended to sleep on your back and avoid putting any pressure or strain on your face, as this can potentially cause misalignment of the threads.

Experiencing a stinging or “pulling” pain or discomfort is normal. As directed, you may take 1g of paracetamol every 6 hours to alleviate any discomfort.

For a period of 7 days, it is advised to avoid alcohol and anti-coagulant medications (unless prescribed for medical reasons). Similarly, refrain from consuming blood-thinning vitamins such as vitamins C, A, and E for the same duration.

Avoid extreme temperature conditions, such as saunas or very cold climates, for 10 days. Additionally, it is recommended to abstain from physical exercise for 7 days following the procedure.

If prescribed as part of the treatment protocol, it is important to complete the full course of antibiotics.

It is normal to experience a stinging or “pulling” pain, as well as a scratchy sensation, which will gradually subside over a 3-week period. By week 5, most discomfort sensations should disappear.

Possible complications may include infection, swelling, bruising, foreign body reaction (granuloma), and protrusion. While extremely rare, temporary facial nerve issues may occur due to local anesthesia, swelling, hematoma, or pressure from the cannula or thread on the nerve. If persistent pain is experienced, please contact us for further advice.

From 7 days onwards, you can consider combining the thread-lifting procedure with other treatments such as PRP, Microneedling, or fillers.

A follow-up photography session will be scheduled at 1 month post-treatment. It is important to note that treatment of untreated areas can be initiated at any time.

We advise that you refrain from touching, wetting, and washing your face for a minimum of 12 hours after the treatment. Even after this initial period, it is recommended to avoid scrubbing or massaging the treated area for approximately two weeks. This precaution ensures proper healing and optimal results following the procedure.

Gentle skincare practises, like usual washing, drying and lotioning, can be resumed after 48 hours of the procedure. However, you must avoid exfoliation, tugging, and scrubbing for three weeks. It is best to consult your practitioner if you want to apply any topical medications or strength creams.

You can apply makeup after 48 hours.

You can safely resume light exercises after one week following the procedure. However, it is important to avoid any exercises that may strain or put excessive pressure on the treated area. Prior to resuming weight lifting or engaging in other intense workouts, it is advisable to consult your doctor for personalized guidance.

Additionally, activities such as yoga or other meditation exercises that involve bowing your head below the level of your heart should be avoided for at least one week to prevent any potential complications. Prioritizing your safety and allowing ample time for healing will contribute to optimal recovery and desired results.

In the case of swimming, it is recommended to wait until the threads entry areas have completely healed before submerging it in water. The same caution applies to saunas and hot tubs, as the heat and moisture can potentially disrupt the healing process. It is always advisable to consult your doctor for specific guidance

Once your skin has healed around the threads inserted for lifting, we recommend pairing your thread lift with a treatment such as Thermage FLX, HIFU, laser resurfacing techniques, radiofrequency microneedling.

HIFU uses gentle pulses of ultrasound energy to heat the connective tissues beneath the skin, thereby stimulating collagen production. By combining this procedure with a thread lift, you can maximize the overall amount of skin firming you receive and create more even lifting by treating the neck as well as the face.

While thread lifts can tighten the skin effectively, they aren’t designed to address blemishes on the skin’s surface. As such, banishing the superficial signs of aging—like age spots, areas of uneven pigmentation and fine lines—will require a technique known as laser “skin resurfacing.” During laser skin resurfacing, the top layer of the dermis is removed, stripping away the aforementioned blemishes.
